About the scene
Keep It Weird.
Austin earned the Live Music Capital nickname the hard way: by hosting more independently booked shows per capita than just about any city in the country, and then institutionally protecting that distinction through every wave of growth and gentrification. The Red River strip is still the geographic heart of it — Stubb's amphitheater, Mohawk, Empire Control Room & Garage, and Cheer Up Charlies cluster within blocks of each other, hosting a different bill every night of the week.
South of downtown, the Continental Club anchors South Congress with the longest-running honky-tonk and blues residency calendar in town. Antone's Nightclub holds court as the keeper of Austin's blues legacy, with stretches of multi-night residencies from the city's deep bench of blues and roots players. The Parish handles soul, hip-hop, and indie touring; Historic Scoot Inn covers eastside outdoor shows; ACL Live at The Moody Theater is the upscale theatrical room with the highest-grossing seated capacity in town.
Genre breadth here is unmatched — country, Texas swing, Latin, indie rock, psych, hip-hop, electronic, and a noisy DIY scene all coexist. SXSW in March and ACL Festival in October are the obvious tentpoles, but the everyday calendar runs heavy enough that any week pulls a usable list. The Austin feed on Rager surfaces what's happening across the working-night venues, not just the festival hype.
